Puppy nipping problems?
My 3 month old pup is so adorable but bites and nips constantly. Sometimes I think that he is just playing, but other times he growls and bites hard. I tried picking him up by the scruff of his neck and telling him NO! but that just gets him riled up even more and he comes back and bites harder. Ive tried turing my back and walking away but he sprints after me and bites my feet and ankles. Ive given him chew toys when he bites and that works some of the time but sometimes he just spits them out and bites me. He is a herding dog and I know nipping is in his blood, I just want to know the best way to limit his biting.
I've got 2 herding dogs right now, and believe me, nipping is NOT in their blood. Each and every puppy, regardless of breed, bites. They stop when their owner teaches them bite inhibition. The correct way, not by picking him up by the scruff of the neck. All you're doing is making your dog aggressive and teaching him to be afraid of you and never to trust you! A really good book on basic dog training might be a good investment for you.
To teach bite inhibition you need to be very, very consistent. Each and every time your puppy bites, you yelp "ouch!!!!" and turn your back or leave the room if you need to. Herding dogs are extremely smart and learn anything at all very quickly. Your puppy will learn to bite very quickly if you stop acting aggressive and train him correctly.
